For Immediate Release:

Holland hopes to pass effective animal cruelty legislation in 40th Parliament

The fight for effective animal cruelty legislation continues, said MP Mark Holland, who has reintroduced his private member’s bill on animal cruelty.

Holland’s animal cruelty bill is now numbered C-229. It is identical to his private member’s bill C-373 from the 39th Parliament, which died on the Order Paper when the recent federal election was called.

“It’s unthinkable that Canada’s animal cruelty laws have not fundamentally changed since 1892,” said Holland. “We must act now to bring Canada’s animal cruelty laws into the 21st Century.”

Holland’s bill has galvanized support among Canadians and respected animal welfare groups across the country, who favour reforms closing loopholes in the Criminal Code that allow known perpetrators of animal cruelty to walk away from their crimes. This is the third time he has sponsored this legislation, and continues the work of successive Liberal governments on this issue.

“For almost 10 years, this bill has been debated by both houses of Parliament, by animal welfare groups and the animal use industry, and by Canadians from coast to coast,” declared Holland. “It’s time for Parliament to work together to finally make this bill law.”
